Real Action - Butterfly pupil and mother

Yes, he's holding it upside down, but this little boy - one of our Butterfly pupils - has really earned it. His mother is very pleased too!

Many children start the reading programme several years behind in their reading and heading for failure and possible disaffection in their teens. Once on the programme their reading levels swiftly rise to levels appropriate to, and often beyond, their age. Behaviour in our ordered classes improves too.

Real Action is an ambitious educational charity.  We exist to tackle child illiteracy in disadvantaged communities in London. The charity was founded in 1997 to deal with the problem of child gangs that roamed the Mozart Estate in Queen’s Park, north Westminster – and were found to be illiterate. The first Butterfly Saturday Reading School was set up in 1999 on the Mozart Estate by the charity’s founder, Roger Diamond. Since then our Butterfly Saturday Schools have expanded. We now have three Butterfly Saturday Reading Schools in operation amid housing estates in north Westminster and north Kensington.
